The Calm Before the Storm

The storm has now finally passed in Toronto.  We were lucky enough to only experience strong winds and rain here.  Not going to lie, I did stock up on water, canned goods and snacks just in case.  The media coverage of the storm and its potential effects on Toronto were exaggerated, in my opinion.  Not nearly as nerve wracking as the Typhoon I experienced in Japan.

I recently received a Pentax SLR from my Dad's camera collection and have been experimenting with settings.  I brought my camera with me on the day before and the day after Sandy to see if there were any interesting pictures.  I ended up taking before and afters at Ryerson Park, although the only real changes you can see are the leaves strewn across the path.  I love the vibrant colors of the leaves and the patterns that start to appear as you zoom in.

I have always been interested in photography, now more so with a new camera in hand! It's hard to believe I was just in New York a few months ago and my heart goes out to those who suffered during the storm.  I have been following the news coverage closely, especially the images.  Here are a few links showing the storm through photography:

Lucian Matis (Signature) Spring 2013

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

Loved the complex and colorful patterns/prints in jackets, halter tops and pants.  Giant hoop earrings gave these outfits a 60's yet modern, urban look.  The long, structured black dress and the red one were stunning, but a delicate gold chain or strap was definitely needed to keep them on the shoulders.  Matis' shows are always much anticipated with lots of ooh's and whispers both in the line-ups and at the shows.

Lucian titled this collection "Mosaic" as it is "inspired by the mosaics of Morocco in contrast with the transparency and neutrality of the papyrus." You will find custom pattern designed fine cottons, silks, leather and crocodile embossed leather in this collection.  Jewelry by Dandi Maestre and shoes by Town Shoes.  Visit lucianmatis.com for more information.

Matis by Lucian Matis (Contemporary) Spring/Summer 2013

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

Another stunning collection by Lucian Matis.  Lucian's collections continue to wow and dazzle more with every season we attend.  This season, models wearing the same color and style of shoes draws much more attention to the clothes.  The focus was on the prints and how they were combined and draped to attract the eye and flatter the figure.  Reds and blacks were also fabulous, but I kept waiting for more and more of those patterns.  If the weather was at all grey, the prints would lighten it up and provide all the hues of sun and blue sky.  If the weather was hot and brilliant, the solids would rest the eye but also provide a strong statement that the best of times was here.

Adrian Wu - Spring Collection 2013

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

What I've always liked about Adrian Wu, besides his artistry and element of surprise, is that in his show description booklet, he always lists his models by name and gives credit to his team.  This time, his musicians, Caitlin Comeau Jarvis and Patrick Dilkie, were recognized for their tributes to Ella Fitzgerald, Glen Miller and Nat King Cole.  This music provided a serene and nostalgic setting for the startling 50's styled polyurethane art works that one might see on a movie set or in store windows.  Is this the aftermath of a nuclear meltdown or designs for floating in space or on the ocean floor?  The dresses, in metallic looking red, black, grey, and gold were molded to the figure, open at the back (would they stay on?) and made sounds as they moved with the models down the runway.  The dark 'up-do' hair styles, heavy black framed glasses and bright red lips were yet another nod to the structured, formal 50's.  Great fashion always reflects the past, shows us the now and reaches to what might be.  These designs are all of that!  Click HERE to see Adrian's collection from last season and click HERE to see all of his collections from previous seasons.

DEMOYO - Spring/Summer 2013

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

The warm seasons are very much reflected in this collection of short, flirty dresses, white crochet detailing, and soft pastels and lots of blues and whites.  Two long dresses, one white and the other black, looked stunning and could be dressed up or down. This is a first collection here by the Zimbabwean born designer and I look forward to seeing more of her work.  Loved the fitted white jacket that could be worn short or longer thanks to a cleverly placed zipper.

Adhesif spring/summer at Eco Fashion Week

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

Melissa Ferreira and team did a magnificent job for their runway show at Eco Fashion Week!  She hand sources her vintage fabrics, textiles and second hand clothing locally and then refashions and repurposes them to create "to die for" clothing and accessories.  Quality wools and denims are usually hand dyed and processed in safe and environmentally friendly ways.

As for the collection, it was dynamic, colorful and unique.  Cropped tops, bustiers, belted dresses and flirty floral skirts were flattering and feminine.  Shoes by John Fluevog further emphasized this one-of-a-kind ambience!  Bravo to Melissa for a great runway presentation and please visit her website at adhesifclothing.com.  To see our previous posts on Adhesif, click HERE.

Eco Fashion Week - Lucky Season Five

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

Eco Fashion Week - Lucky Season Five!

The number 5 was Coco Chanel's lucky number and it is also a winning one for the 5th Eco Fashion Week season.  Held at Robson Square Wednesday Oct. 17-Friday Oct. 19th, this was a spectacular and full program of runway shows, product exhibits, seminars and a whole lot of meet and greets and welcomes to the world of recycling, redesigning, purchasing and sourcing locally, and being more mindful about what, where and how we build our wardrobes.  This is my year attending Eco Fashion Week: a truly funky, feisty, fabulous and totally thrifty showcase of what can be created out of the vast array of second hand and reusable material that might otherwise end up in the landfill.

Robson Square and Vancouver Art Gallery

Myriam Laroche believes in partnerships and there were many, as always, to achieve this much success. Value Village, Vancity,  and The Economic Commission, were major names on the photo op backdrop but there were lots more...I enjoyed a lovely vegetarian dinner from The Noodle Box and a host of other refreshments including snacks, wine and exotic cheeses and fancy crackers. Colin colinhargreaves.com and Carla, provided "just the right mix" of music to set the stage. Although we received a welcome letter, there was very little evidence of wasted paper, plastic or cardboard, anywhere.  Name badges were recycled at the end of the 3 days and, as you would expect, all appropriate recycling practices were observed.  Myriam's opening night outfit, a brilliant, bright pink short dress and white lace up ankle booties were right off the Value Village rack.  I wore a black felt hat, black and white hounds tooth tailored jacket and carried a patent leather bag also from the Village.  Conversation starters often began with the question, "Where did you get that?"  And the responses presented a range of second hand, vintage, re-gifted, locally redesigned, preloved treasure troves.

The Runway shows from Value Village materials were extraordinary!  What can be created for all sizes, shapes and ages, is always unique and designed to fit and flatter.  I loved the show for men, including the accessories and headpieces.  It was a spring/summer show after all!  The 68 pound challenge undertaken by Kim Cathers was an example of how material that could easily be reused is often wasted when it could be used to make the most beautiful pieces ever!  Value Village is to be commended for sharing materials rather than tossing them into the ever increasing landfill.  The 68 pounds of material they gave Kim for her runway show was enough to make many, many runway shows.  She still has bins of unused but perfectly wonderful future 'fashions' for another day.  We discard so much; why not let someone else put it to good use?  Donate, have a clothing swap, remake,
reuse and keep refashioning those quality, locally made outfits.  Don't buy a hundred cheap, poorly made bits of this and that, just for this occasion or throw stuff out because you've had it for awhile and are tired of it.  And by the way, instead of endlessly window shopping, come to Eco Fashion week and find something special, something unique, and something that will last until you refashion and recreate it for your next life.
