More New York Fashion Week Highlights: Black and White

Paris Fashion week is roaring away, but I still have a few highlights from New York Fashion Week to share. I went through all of the collections on my iPad and saved them all for a later day, only to discover that I had saved mostly black and white looks!  Black and White was shown by many of the designers for the Spring/Summer 2013 season.  Take a look!

RACHEL ROY AND HER FABULOUS COLLECTION AT THE BAY; A FASHION EVENT

Written by Treasure Seeker Colleen (Colleen Tsoukalas)

Last Friday night, September 21, a group of friends and I attended yet another beautifully presented fashion event at The Bay, downtown.  At the White Room, second floor, we were welcomed to the Rachel Roy collection and had the opportunity to meet her as well.  Usually there are mannequins right down the runway, but these were live models displaying gorgeous, well designed, figure flattering outfits, moving, changing looks and answering questions as they worked.  It was a very interactive and refreshingly different way of showing us how we could wear and accessorize these styles.  Rachel's jewellery collection was also on display and I like one of her titles: Amulet, and its promise of "...protection and good fortune to all that wear it."

I admire the combination of animal print and solids as well as prints and solids and the vibrant jewel tones, especially the greens and oranges in the dresses and tops.  This collection is intricate in design and yet light and soft in both texture and appearance.  It was amazing to talk with Rachel and I can see why she is so successful as an artist.  She is attentive to each person she meets; she seems to be hearing new stories and creating new fashions as she chats.

Hats off to The Bay and their invitations into the world of Fashion and Entertaining.  The refreshments were fabulous and plentiful.  Catering as always, divine!  Sales staff very helpful and friendly.  Can't wait until the next event.  Hats off, all!
PS Very late, afterwards, we rushed down to get our pictures taken with the David Beckam statue!  It seems that the world of Fashion is for the very tall, but there is still a place for us!

Thanks Hudsons Bay, thanks Rachel Roy and bye bye to David Beckham who is off to other cities!

An attendees shirt! Everyone was dressed up for the occasion!

La Canadienne - Finally the Boots We have all Been Looking For!

Where to find the perfect pair of boots for this fall/winter season?  Look no further than Montreal based brand, La Canadienne!  This season La Canadienne features "luxurious materials and rich tones, great detailing with beautiful, luxurious touches; mineral colours, natural skins, studs and buckles, leather trimmings and embroideries".

I love their selection of platform boots.  I've learned over time that it is important to invest in quality boots that are going to last through tough Toronto winters!  A good platform knee high boot will elongate your frame while keeping you dry at the same time.  See photos from La Canadienne's latest F/W 12-13 collection and check them out for all your winter boot purchases. If you can't make it to Montreal, you can check out their selection online here.

La Canadienne's Top Six Boot Trends:

1. Ankle Boots
2. Platform Boots
3. Wedges
4. Riding/motorcycle Boots
5. Shearling Boots
6. Retro Inspired Boots

Shop for Jayu Event

I attended a Shop for Jayu event way back in the summer and haven't had a chance to post it yet, but I am thrilled to share an interview with the designer Sally Han!  She was so friendly and helpful at the event and her jewelry is unique and affordable.

A: What inspired you to get into the jewelry business?
Sally:  I was inspired by two girls who started a bag business called Koie.  During that time I was driven to do more with my life and decided to play around with jewelry making.  When I was 19, I made a few designs and had the opportunity to launch my line at an event raising funds for "Lost children".  I was amazed with the feedback I was receiving and I decided to make it my full time business.

A: You now have two lines of jewelry (Shop for Jay and Psalms 91:1)  What are the differences between the two lines and what are the inspirations?
Sally:  Psalms 91:1 Accessories is our main company, the head sister line.  Its main purpose is to make a difference in the world using the gift of jewelry making and inspiring others to do the same.  The end vision for Psalms is to one day build infrastructures in refugees in Korea, Africa and Canada.  We continue to keep our designs organic and hand crafted rather than manufactured.

In order to raise enough funds for this vision to come true, we needed our sister line Shop for Jayu which is a line that is designed and hand crafted by different designers in Korea.  This line is strictly sold under $60 so that we will have faster cash flow to support Psalms.

What is your own personal jewelry style and what styling advice would you give today?
Sally: My own personal style with jewelry is very simple.  Even when wearing bold pieces I like to keep it simple and clean.  I love edgy, manly pieces the most, nothing too feminine.  I think my personal style definitely reflects my designs.

The styling advice I would give is, wear pieces you feel comfortable in.  And think outside of the box!  Don't be afraid to mix gold and silver, hard and soft, masculine and feminine.

A: What are your top three favorite pieces for this fall?
