An interview with Jin Ryu
Could you tell us how you started White Crow?
I've always loved fashion. I went to Ryerson University for Fashion Communication to be a buyer, but it turned out I found the entrepreneur and business classes to be the most inspiring. After I graduated, I worked as a product developer at an outerwear company. On one of my work trips to Asia, I went shopping with my friends in Seoul, South Korea to these all-night mega complexes that housed hundreds of independent boutiques. All the merchandise there was so on trend and fun and affordable, it was very inspiring. That was my turning point. Then I started researching, made a business plan, and took a big risk (leaving my job and a good raise) to pursue my dream of opening my own store. With the help from my lovely friends (my bestie in Korea helps with the logistics in Korea, Rachel to keep my brand focus and Caroline as my beautiful model) I was able to launch my site. And now White Crow has been open since mid-December! :)
Favorite spring trend?
I love all the S/S trends, they are called 'trends' for a reason, right? I'd say my top 2 picks are denim and lace/sheer. Celine and Stella McCartney really made denim classic and sophisticated this season. I love how clean and crisp their denims look, almost office-friendly, just in time to sweep away all the tired out fakely distressed skinnies. The lace/sheer trend has been going strong for a while now, but I really love how you can play with texture and colour underneath. Absolutely loved Richard Nicoll's take on lace, how he layered black and white lace with a lace bra! Amazing! You'll continue to see this trend on our website as well.
How to keep warm in Toronto?
Layering and more layering. Layer as much as you can on top on layers! Layer t-shirts and chambreys with thick sweaters and cardigans. Layer stockings with knee highs and leggings with chunky socks. Also HOT coffee keeps you warm and wired.
Your fashion inspiration(s)
As much as I'd like to say films or art pieces (I love looking at them!), they don't inspire me in terms of fashion. I'm more inspired by how many people wear fashion, mixing texture and colours, or an impeccably constructed garment. I love fashion magazines and fashion blogs because that's where I get real-life inspirations from. Fashion editors like Taylor Tomasi, Joanna Hillman and Emmanuelle Alt and celebs like th Olsen twins, Kate Bosworth, Chloe Sevigny really take the cake for me.
Here are just a few of the looks available at White Crow Online.
