Vancouver International Fashion Festival, Produced by David Chen, IPOP Canada

On October 20, 2018, at the Pacific Gateway Hotel, Richmond, we were treated to an evening of  Fashion, Dance and Roller Dance, Music, Titanic History and more. This is the third Fashion Festival and I wrote about the previous two fabulous events here and here

The Vancouver International Fashion Festival is co-sponsored by The International Presentation of Performance (iPOP!) and Nikko International, Inc. David Chen, produces this family event, and  it is one to watch for, twice a year.

There are many sponsors and many great prize raffles, adding to the surprise elements of this festival.

Stellar performances from Roller Dance Owl,  and The Vancouver Tap Dance Society. Harman Maddhar, singer/songwriter sang about his journey and the importance of self esteem and achievement.

Designers included: Darlene Karimi (Titanic Costume/Performance) Anna Wan, Xin Gu, Kameron Karimi, Brett McDermott, Kiana Delsousz and more, including a terrific team of models, Makeup Artists, and stylists.

The TITANIC Artifact Exhibition played a big part in adding a backdrop for historic costume and performance, designed by Darlene Karimi.

Watch for the Vancouver Fashion Festival, bringing Fashion, Performance and Music, to you next Spring.

For SHINE, 2018 Carolyn Bruce Salutes Alexander McQueen and Highlights the Support Needed for Mental Health and Addiction

In the words of Dean Thullner-Veljacic, Founder and Producer, "TOGETHER WE SHINE!" And shine they did, a three page cast of Designers, Performers, Artists, Musicians, Stylists, Writers, Photographers and more, all coming together in support of Mental Health and Addiction at the 2018 SHINE event. Two main recipients of the significant funds raised, are: Lions Gate Hospital: Carlile Youth Disorders Centre, Hope Centre and The Canadian Mental Health Association.

A documentary film might better show the vast array of talent you will see at SHINE, and it transforms the Commodore and brings so much light into what can be a dark night. Interested in the creative process of designing, especially channeling McQueen, I visited the studio of Carolyn Bruce as she was getting ready for rehearsal, here

This is what I managed to snap as I watched her grand finale! Next year, I plan to sit with those fabulous Photographers and, to reserve a table. My ideal would be that everyone captures their favourite moment and then to write about that. As Dean says, "...it is essential for everyone to be able to express themselves on their own terms..." So here is the last act of the evening and Carolyn has provided her inspiration, symbols, sources and references below. Thank you for inviting me to SHINE! The stars are out!

Photos by Colleen and descriptions from the designer, Carolyn Bruce herself!

DEER ANTLERS...
This is one of his iconic looks and I carried the antler theme over into the jewelry and hand pieces...using antique toned metals and pearls...and a deer head coathook as a centre piece to give dimension.
Thank you to My Sister's Closet for the wedding dresses that were combined to look like his lace dress.

...THE LIZARD...
A look to touch on McQueen’s lizard and snake skin collections with an upcycled leather belt and vines...combined with a silver lizard from the thrift shop and a snake and other metal bugs...to create an earthy toned piece.

...THE SWALLOWS...
A beautiful design with gold and orange jeweled hues...combined with a hint of the dark side of Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS.
The headpiece was made from a disassembled chandelier...embellished with tassels and ostrich plumes.
A tribute to McQueen’s love of falconry and taxidermy...around which he based many of his collections.

...HIGHLAND FLING...
A powerful look with dragons featuring in each of the designs, that represents McQueen’s Scottish heritage and the crimes against Scotland by England.
I was amazed to learn that we share the same ancestral birthplace...the Isle of Skye.
I tried to show how family and heritage can add strength to our lives...especially during times of strife and attack, from both individuals and society...and our own minds.
Thank you to My Sister's Closet, for the kilt and tartan bustier, that helped to pull this look together.

...THE ROBOT...
This design dealt with the ways people with mental conditions are treated...the pieces combined elements of shock therapy and restraints and as a result of these treatments individuals are left as unemotional robotic zombies.
Sadly, McQueen’s mental issues were not treated and resulted in his eventual suicide.

...GLITZ QUEEN...
A look from his memorable revolving finale, where the model was spray painted by industrial robots.
I chose to design the jewelry around a jeweled queen theme, complete with a tiara, to illustrate that even a queen can suffer from mental issues and feel out of control.

...TWISTED BARBIE...
This look was to illustrate the depression caused by trying to look like and idyllic...but totally unrealistic doll’s body and the addiction that ensues as individuals repeatedly attempt to attain the looks through plastic surgery procedures.
The design depicted dismembered torsos, arms and legs, with surgical
scissors and a purse of discarded body parts.
The struggle to be perfect and someone we are not...takes its toll on people’s self esteem and happiness, leading to depression and suicide...even in those who are preteen and play with these dolls.

...THE UNICORN...
My finale look that was a a decent into the fantasy world where McQueen spent much of his time, tapping into an imaginary world for his amazing designs, a place to escape reality and be free...where many people find solace when coping with mental health issues.
This was an over the top piece, centered around a large unicorn head with gold and pearl accents and chains. Then, to accent the fantasy, a unicorn hobby horse to ride.

Promenades sur L'eau - Vancouver Ocean Literacy and Fashion October, 2018

At the Vancouver Aquarium, as part of a wide reaching Vancouver Oceans Literacy Week, the Ocean Bridge Programme (Ocean Wise) featured three very accomplished leaders, working with teams of young people, determined to save our oceans by reducing pollutants, especially plastics. Chuk Odenigbo, Victoria Lui and Jay Matsushiba were our hosts for the evening.

Music for the night, a delightful accompaniment to the runway ocean themed fashions, was written and produced by de_vinchee, a Capilano University Grad, (Jazz Studies) who is also working on a degree in Music Therapy.

The human connection to ocean life and the importance of sustainable/eco fashion practices were aptly shown on the runway by six Designers: Evan Clayton, Giovanna (Joanne) Ricci, NLA Designs  - Nicolette Lang-Anderson, Local Laundry - Shane Butler, Vestige Story - Aileen Lee, and Alex S. Yu.

Evan Clayton's collection, VENUS, featured sea goddesses, with dresses of waves, watery translucence: the sea in calm and the sea in storm, a strong, life sustaining constant, yet fragile.

Giovanna (Joanne) Ricci's florals are those found in oceans and gardens. Fabrics of tulle and lace are structures and patterns of ocean plant and animal life.

NLA Designs - Nicolette Lang-Anderson's  beautifully fitted, ocean colours, supporting hand made, local and eco fashion.

Local Laundry - Shane Butler (Apparel that Builds Community through 5 Pillars: Where you're from, sharing stories, collaborating, giving back, made in Canada. Casual and comfortable, long lasting and aimed at reducing waste and carbon footprint.

Vestige Story - Aileen Lee "For women with a story to tell" Natural, plant based fabrics, small batch production.

Alex S. Yu's collection was quirky, colourful and playful. I loved the chunky heeled shoes, in a riot of colour.

Make sure to take a look at the amazing video at the end of this article! An inspiring evening and a call to action to reduce plastics ocean pollution.

Ocean Bridge Project

I  was so lucky to meet two young environmentalists from this team of the Ocean Bridge Programme and one, Alex Anaviapik, from Nunavit, is not only a cultural interpreter but also an emerging designer, whose outfit was made from a curtain. Would love to see more of her designs at future events!

In keeping with the themes of conservation, reducing waste and pollution, and best eco-fashion practices, I wore hand made, base metal, lead free earrings, a diving mermaid and a turtle friend that can be worn individually or as a pair, by Carolyn Bruce Designs, a raven jacket by Dahlia Drive, stockings made of textile waste by Katherine Soucie of Sans Soucie and a dress thrifted from My Sister's Closet.
