Fairy Tale Fantasy Couture and Fashion with Eduardo Castro and the Society for the Museum of Original Costume

The Costume Designs of Eduardo Castro
Designers Guild Award winning, Emmy nominated Costume Designer

Presented by the Society for the Museum of Original Costume (smoc)
March 20, 2016 at the beautiful Hycroft Mansion

Post and photos by Dianna Drahanchuk

Who’d have thought a job as an usher would ignite the spark of passion for a life-long career? Eduardo got the job at a Los Angeles music centre that hosted operas, symphonies, plays AND the Academy Awards when he was seventeen years old. Gradually he worked and educated his way back stage and then through all stages of costume design. He eventually designed for tv shows like Miami Vice, Ugly Betty, and many others up to now on the Once Upon a Time series from which these costumes came. The exquisite pieces, that can cost up to $15,000 each partly due to generous applications of details such as Swarovski crystals, were Alexander McQueen inspired. One really impressive fact is that all the were made by his team in Canada!

Eduardo is personable and approachable, well loved by his Bridge Studio team. Twenty of the 35 person team were present even though they’d heard all his stories before. He takes pride in getting things done smoothly and quickly, an absolute necessity in film, and stressed that relationships are most important to achieve that end. Five of his team told their own stories. Melissa provides communications guidance and organization, Mitchell works on costume design, Kirsten deals with actors, and Heather and Holly age and dye costumes (see detail of “moonlight peeking through forest” photo below). Because Eduardo’s greatest talent may be in harmonizing the team, creativity flows, allowing for the amazing results seen in the costumes presented.

Asked whether his costumes are true to history, Eduardo replies that they are a “mash up”, after all they are made for fantasy.

Samuel Yeung: From London to Vancouver Fashion Week, 2016

A colorful, dynamic collection of clothing and accessories blasted down the runway to the sounds of "Hey Mickey"! People around me danced and sang along. Samuel told me that he loved Vancouver and Vancouver Fashion Week. Both are so much more relaxed than London, he said. He made many friends at the shows and events he participated in all week. He will be back.

SOFIA at Vancouver Fashion Week 2016

Sofia Mendez Schenone, is an award winning local designer, via Victoria and Chile!  Her collections can be found in boutiques across Canada. I loved the embroidery, the jewel toned velvets, the black and greys, all perfect Autumn/Winter colors, yet hinting at warmer weather to come. This line is beautiful yet practical; I can see it at work or for an evening out. It signals independence, strength and confidence-all easier with great style and design.

Thank you for the opportunity to see what is available, right here, in Vancouver!

ANIIMIISM BY Cassie Dee, Vancouver Designer Shines on the Runway

Cassie Dee designed a gorgeous silk, fringed wrap that I have been wearing to many events, this year! It has been to The Museum of Vancouver, The Japanese Consulate, and The Vancouver Art Gallery, and now to Cassie's runway show at Vancouver Fashion Week 2016. Every time I wear this multi colored silk dream, people come up to touch it and ask me who made it. It is unique and it shines in every picture! So thanks, Cassie, for your fabulous designs and for the invitation to see your new collection!

To start the night off, Norm Lee, photographer extraordinaire was hard at work, giving us brilliant glimpses of the ways Vancouverites dress for the runway. Yes, everyone has a chance to walk that walk, if they choose, and many, do!

So after all of that careful setting up of cameras, iphones, and selfie sticks, we were asked to clear the floor for ANIIMIISM!

Loved the long hair and soft make-up on the models. It provided such an elegant, classic face for each outfit. And those outfits...especially loved the dresses. Like my silk wrap, they hug and flatter and move easily. Expert tailoring means that flared pants fit and are never baggy or sloppy. Unique color combinations make this, truly a collection of wearable art!

Allison Wonderland at Vancouver Fashion Week, 2016

Allison Smith showed two collections: Allison Wonderland and Pillar! While the first was more of a winter palette, I thought the second, Pillar, led nicely into Spring, with its lighter colors. Both collections are beautifully made and are forever classics. Well constructed, they are durable and not prone to losing their shape or smooth nap. The black two piece outfit could be dressed up or down and is definitely a wardrobe staple. Loved seeing flattering fit, variety of length and comfort galore, here.

See more about Allison here!

Lovely to see you at work, Allison Smith.

Wearing Carolyn Bruce Designs -Steampunk in Vancouver

Carolyn designs steampunk jewelry and a vast array of other unique treasures. She uses antique silver and bronze lead free base metals and found objects and has many ambassadors who are delighted to show her work off, around the city and the world.

Just the names of the necklaces: Tourist in Paris and Fashionably Red: A Tribute to Iris Apfel, plus the bright turquoise sky of the third, made me want to travel and so off we went, around Vancouver, to share the iconic jewelry and the exciting conversations it always inspires.
Vancouver Fashion Week, 2016, Nordstrom's, The Vancouver Art Gallery, The Pendulum Gallery, Terry Sasaki Gallery, and finally The Vancouver Public Library, with its special Fashion collection and Book Mark, The Library Store, where you will find more ways to support VPL buying more Fashion (and other) must have reads.

People actually talked more to the necklaces than they did to me. Oh so many compliments!
Many thanks Carolyn Bruce for being the marvelous designer that you are! Thanks, too, to Victoria Clements, Marketing and Media for Carolyn Bruce Designs. On a rainy, depressing day, she brought out the sun by bringing a VALT 2016 (yes VALT is coming up) bag full of the necklaces and earrings, and lots of ideas for next sparkling steps.

12th Time Gold for LaSalle College, at Vancouver Fashion Week 2016

LaSalle always turns out the best runway shows and this one was no exception. Collaborating with the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, (SOM) and the Nimbus School of  Recording and Media, LaSalle designers' models were each accompanied by a different music video by SOM students and vocals were by LiSophie Elder-Labrie, also of SOM. Tracey Pincott, a Vancouver Producer, staged this masterpiece and stunning Lizbell models really showcased the expert design and highlighted the theme of rhythm and movement, and the richness and complexity of multi cultures and individual voice and style.

Staff, Families and Friends, dress for the occasion, fill the first few rows of seats, cheer, applaud and stand at the end of each show. Many of them wear those wonderful designs. Students hug their instructors. This is a huge collaboration and celebration of Students' and Schools' fine achievement.
Five students presented 8 looks and I chose one or two favorites from each. For more details and photos, please check out Marilyn R. Wilson's blog: Olio. You can also view our coverage of last year's show here.

Thanks for the invitation, and kudos all!

I am truly Singing in the Rain, remembering LaSalle, this season!
