Durriya Rehan, Owner and Operations Manager and Kendra, Store Manager, welcomed us, gave tours and made this truly a special evening.  Personalized shopping and giftwrapping is always just what you need, especially with our busy schedules.  But always, this can be a quiet place, with comfy chairs, designer change rooms and the most attentive service.

Durriya has extensive experience in India, and Australia and now, lucky for us, she's here at Fine Finds, offering the best customer service and looking forward to being number 1 again next year.

Keltie's jewelry is delicate, sparkling and looks beautiful on that 'little black dress'. She also featured larger statement pieces in gold and silver.  She loves Labradorite and Lapis Lazuli for their blues, purple, grey and green tones.  Hard work, passion for life and kindness are her top priorities, all very evident in her conversation and in her creations.

My favorites this time are: Keltie's earrings, mirrored jewelry bo by Global Chicks, barefoot venus lilly pilly fruit Butter Bath Mixture and Hand Cream and a gorgeous, mauve and pink scarf.  But there is much, much more so off to the hunt!

Thanks to all at Fine Finds for the invitation.  You're number 1.

LaSalle College International at Vancouver Fashion Week: Dramatically Different

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

Thanks to Patricia Robitaille, PR Consultant, LaSalle College, I was fortunate to preview design details, drawings and photos of the students' creations before they opened the Wednesday night show at Vancouver Fashion Week.  I anticipated seeing collections that reflected philosophy, culture, contrast, balance, texture, color, intricate structure, and flawless execution and was not disappointed.  The tone of daring to be different was set.  The dramatic and perfectly timed presentation and the music further captured the audience's attention.

Jesper Annerstedt, from Sweden is intrigued by religious garments and symbols.  His pieces reflect his observation of opposites and contrasts: life and death, black and white, skulls, crosses and more.  Note the silver necklace/belt that adds a modern yet vintage touch to a classic black dress.  Dramatic and solemn, the collection went from church to street fashion, the symbols constantly changing in form and meaning.

Carolina Rojas, from Colombia showed softly draped and pleated pieces that each featured an unexpected touch of color, either in belts or small squares, using color and design as the native people (Kunas) of Colombia do.  There was animation and movement in this collection.  Like Diana Vreeland said, "The eye has to follow."

Sonya Jang (Ess-Jay) from Ottawa, used faux leather and dyed silks for a visually stunning array of color and contrast, especially with the soft, whimsical tops and boldly, strong zippered pants.  No jewelry needed; zippers are all the gold one needs.

Jenna Cotton, from Victoria, featured fabulous oranges and greens and soft purples in her "Bontrast" collection.  Scarves as accessories added a third dimension as well as additional color to many outfits.
Interesting balance was provided by a longer jacket with a long skirt  Loved the precise cut of the green jacket and what might be described as 'west coast' feel to these designs.

Congratulations on your fantastic achievements, LaSalle students!  Where will we see you next?

PS They had a great cheering section of fellow students and Patricia and Alexandre Boucher, Marketing Co-ordinator, LaSalle College, Montreal.

FUTURE BEAUTY: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion at The Seattle Art Museum (SAM)

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

We were so lucky to attend the Future Beauty Community Night Out, Thursday, Sept. 5th at the Seattle Art Museum!  From 6-9, we met models from The Trash Fashion Group, who travelled from floor to floor showcasing their haute trash fashion designs, and invited people of all ages to interact and appreciate the intricately recycled and repurposed clothing and accessories. There was music by SAM Performs: dj100proof and lots of opportunities to get your fashion forward pictures taken and to design your own jewelry. You could make your own creation or see one in process by artist Tariqa Waters.  There was break dancing by Vicious Puppies Crew, SAM style and fashion SAM films, print making, 'highly opinionated tours, a fabulous fashion show by the New York Fashion Academy and so much more to celebrate the 30 Years of Japanese Fashion Exhibit. Art Galleries and Museums really come alive when their collections are enhanced with new interpretations and public collaborations.  Yes, there should be lots of quiet time for reflection and interruption free experiences but, in my opinion, each new exhibit should start and end with a celebration.

Did you know we went to Japan Fashion Week once upon a time?

The 100 pieces, courtesy of the Kyoto Costume Institute and created by the Japanese Masters, as I like to call them, are so beautifully made and are such thought provoking statements that I am totally in awe when I see each one,  and I am even more impressed when some are laid out flat, construction genius revealed and framed as separate works of art.  Rei Kawakubo, who started Comme des Garcons, challenges the tall, slim model type so frequently seen on the runway.  Her pieces scream sculpture, design, one of a kind and think outside of the box. I love her great cape/coat collection for Aug/Winter 2013. Unfortunately, no photographs of the exhibit were allowed, so you really must see the show or buy the book to see Junya Watanabe's "Techno Couture" and Issey Miyake's gorgeous creations, as well as the rest included in this exhibit.

A room was devoted to "Cool Japan" and showed street style in Shibuya and Harajuku.  Cosplay, Manga and Lolita/Gothic Lolita styles as well as Sailor Moon were featured.  Jeweles, masks, bangles and sparkles dazzled the eye.

Throughout the entire exhibit, collection catalogues, framed collection invitations and runway videos made it seem like we were in Japan, perhaps at Tokyo Fashion Week or in any of the cities where fashion is all important and even the smallest places have costume museums.

There is so much to see of the excellent designs of the past thirty years as well as much to look forward to from the up and coming Japanese designers.  I think the world should see FUTURE BEAUTY and hope it continues on a world wide tour.  Sugoi!

Adventures in Vancouver - Whistler, Squamish, Jericho, Spanish Banks and Yaletown

Happy Tuesday everyone! Here are a few shots from my whirlwind trip to Vancouver. It truly is one of the most beautiful places in the summer... emphasis on summer! It was great spending time with family and being out in the sun and up in the mountains away from all the city noise.

Friday, Treasure Seeker Colleen and I hit the fabulous Absolute Spa in the Century Plaza hotel. You can see a picture of us living it up on my Instagram here. Hands down it was one of the most spectacular spas I have visited and to let you in on a little secret... a meal is included in your visit! We enjoyed a patio lunch downtown shortly after and I tried out the Homer Street Cafe for the first time for dinner with my lovely friend Yana whose wedding I attended in Italy (see post here). You can see Instagrams from our delightful dinner here. It's really worth a visit!

Saturday my Dad took me on a jeeping adventure up to Whistler and the beautiful Lake Callaghan. You can read up on the area here. I have never off roaded in a jeep convertible and it was quite the experience. Really nice to get away from the busy city, spend time with family and see something beautiful and humbling.

Sunday we rented a Laser 2 sailing dinghy from the Jericho Sailing Centre for the afternoon. We sailed keel boats when I was growing up, but I haven't sailed properly in ages and haven't had a lot of experience with small dinghies. Nevertheless, we had perfect weather and the most spectacular views, when I wasn't anxiously waiting for the boom to fly over my head! I'm planning on taking lessons next summer to get a bit more experience.

Monday we had a beach barbecue on the beautiful shores of Spanish Banks. Barbecued chicken and  vegies, Bocce, beach walks and more great time spent with family. I am so lucky to have such a great family around me and to have the option of jumping on a plane and being in one of the most beautiful cities in Canada... in the summer! (It rains most of the other months - I kid you not!)
