CAFTCAD Sale - Shopping Tips and Vintage Finds

What an adventure last Saturday was!  For some reason, I decided that my 3k run in the morning wasn't enough and that walking from downtown to the CAFTCAD sale was a good idea!  It ended up being about a 5k walk each way, so another 10k!  It was great exercise, however I was exhausted by the time I got there and not in the best mood to shop.  Nevertheless, I did leave with a fantastic gold eighties necklace!

I attended the CAFTCAD sale last year (see post here) and it was held just down from the Queen Street subway line.  It was very easy to get to and find!  I was really disappointed with the location this year.  I could have taken transit, but the buses didn't run very often and it seemed like more of a hassle than walking.  Also, it was IMPOSSIBLE to find!  Once I arrived, there were not enough signs to tell me that I had to walk around and behind the building, go through security and then find the warehouse situated at the back.  Phew!!
Once there, I had a great time of course.  There was a great variety of vendors carrying vintage and second hand pieces worn for film or TV shows.  Kingpin Chic's Jonathan Hagey was also there.  He always has a fantastic selection of men's wear and is very helpful and friendly to his customers.  Last year he helped appraise my beautiful Louis Vuitton I found at the sale!  His prices are very reasonable and he always takes the time to say hello! Definitely check out his website.  Jonathan sometimes hosts pop up shops with Cabaret vintage, a great vintage boutique on Queen Street.  You can check out their website here.  Jonathan also has a facebook page here.

The food at the CAFTCAD sales is always fantastic! Cora Devries of Cora's Kitchen always has a great spread of super healthy foods available for tired and hungry shoppers!  I got a great salami calzone and delicious juice! You can visit Cora's website here at www.misscoraskitchen.com.
One of the things that always disappoints me is the prices at CAFTCAD.  Vintage is a great investment, but I really think that a lot of vendors raise their prices for sales like these.  BE CAREFUL, take your time at each booth and spend time at the ones where the owners take time to talk to you about the pieces and who are willing to help you find something special.  If they don't say hello or don't ask you if you need help, don't waste your time!  Finally, don't be shy about bartering!  Most vendors are willing to meet you half way and especially later in the day, once the majority of traffic has been through!

On to the necklace I bought!  It is an gold eighties circular necklace and it's comfortable and very easy to wear.  I don't usually find much at a lot of these big sales as I find the amount of items available overwhelming and the crowds too big.  I try and find at least a piece of jewelry that I can keep forever and remember from my travels.  Investing in vintage jewelry has been one of the greatest joys for me!  I bought my necklace from Patricia Thoun who sells vintage jewelry, handbags and collectibles.  She was very helpful and her prices were very reasonable!

Wow, though it seems like a feat in itself to get to, it looks like it's quite worth it. Great tips on being careful and having patience to sift through vintage is always a must. :)
