Zimsculpt Stone Sculptures -Van Dusen Garden

Written by Treasure Seeker Colleen

On a beautiful sunny day, we encountered the Zimbabwe Sculptures displayed throughout Van Dusen Garden. They peered at us from beneath the tall sunflowers, invited us to dance in the wild grasses, talked to us of their history and drew us in to every corner. They seemed to say, "Come further, don't miss us." There are 150 giant heads, dancers, mothers, lovers, animals, abstracts - all smooth, gleaming shapes and edges, sculpted by new and established artists, two of whom, Passmore Mupindiko and Patrick Sephani, were actually creating new forms as we walked along the paths.

The sculptures are being exhibited from September 1 to September 25 this year at Van Dusen Garden, 37th and Oak, in Vancouver. You can read more about them on the website but there is nothing as fantastic as seeing them for yourself. Van Dusen Garden is a sanctuary in the middle of the city. It offers continuous education about the world of plants and also about the work of local and international artists. The 150 sculptures here are part of a 300 piece travelling collection, now in its 10th year. Curated by Vivienne Croissette, who also founded the project, the collection has been as far as Toronto, London , Bahrain and Dubai and more and is here for the third and final time. Sculpting from stone and other found materials is an ancient tradition in Zimbabwe and the sculptures can be purchased. Proceeds benefit the artists, the collection and the garden.
