Day 1: Montonari Ono, Junya Tashiro, Mint DesignsDay 1:

These are the designers from day 1: Montonari Ono, Junya Tashiro and Mint Designs. I will be posting about Mint Designs later as I am writing an article about the show for String Magazine.

Motonari Ono

Montonari Ono went to the Mejiro Design School, the London College of Fashion Foundation and the Royal College of Fine Art Antwerp. He worked for London designer Bora Aksu as a chief pattern-maker before starting Montonari Ono in Japan in 2006.

The collection was quite stunning and set to a beautiful classical soundtrack that included Carmen and Madame Butterfly. All of the models wore red wigs, red lips and dramatic make-up.

Many of the looks featured high Victorian collars, lace and ruffles. Form fitting blazers in navy and beige were key looks in this collection. He continued the strong shoulder trend that we have seen on runways around the world this past year. The accessories really made the collection stand out. There were garter straps, snake skin belts, lace gloves, red strappy shoes and fabulous clutches!

JUNYA TASHIRO

Junya Tashiro is a self taught designer who started his own label, JUNYA TASHIRO, in 2004. He has been showing collections at JFW since 2006. He works out of Fukuoka and has two lines: JUNYA TASHIRO and Himitsukiti.

We flew from Tokyo Midtown to Harajuku for the Junya Tashiro show. The show began with a sudden rush of smoke that continued throughout the show as the models appeared drifted through it. The models were mostly dressed in white and looked like angels floating through a mist on the runway. The collection was based on the German word Oblaat which means clearness.

We saw quite a few people in the audience wearing JUNYA TASHIRO patterns but we did not see them in the show. There collection consisted mostly of white cotton fabrics of multiple layers. They were mostly day casual dresses but there were a few pieces that could be worn as summer evening looks. Many of the dresses had additional inserts of fabrics and all were hand woven stitched. The models also donned long white hair and headpieces and crowns. Fitted blazers of corduroy and linen, genie pants and capris were also present in this collection.
