Yvonne Lau in Dazed and Confused

I recently read about Yvonne Lau in Dazed and Confused Magazine online in an interview with Flora Wong. Most of you probably know it, but if you haven't checked it out in a while, it's worth a second look! It always features up and coming designers, fashion news and a great playlist of new and different music!

Twenty-two year old London based designer, Yvonne Lau, created a futuristic and risky collection for her graduation show! Her collection consisted of silver architectural alphabet pieces. It's great to see young designers pushing the envelope right at the beginning of their careers. She designs with the "strong and powerful women in mind." Her current design aesthetic revolves around "simple and bold shapes but exaggerated by different materials to creat big structures." Read the full interview at Dazed and Confused.

Definitely a futuristic approach
to all the glitter and sequins that
are so popular right now!
Thoughts?

Shiraishi Adventure-Vacation Destination Two

Day 1

The next part of Obon vacation was spent at Shiraishi-Jima island. A small hidden secret island in Okayama prefecture. Makensie had heard about the island while on a bus trip to the airport for our Okinawa vacation. She traveled there with her parents and decided it was a must for our Obon adventure!

We booked ourselves a Ryokan (Sans Chans) for two nights and met up with Makensie's friends Spencer and Spencer. We took the express train from Hiroshima and arrived at the port to take the small ferry out to the island. The ride was about twenty minutes. When we arrived we were not disappointed! We went straight out to the beach and spent the afternoon lazing in the sun and relaxing. The two Spencers bought a kite and amused themselves by swimming out the small island nearby. Unfortunately, they managed to get themselves pretty sunburned! We also managed to get really burned. We spend so little time in the sun here in Japan, that when we do get out, we get fried! It was worth it though :)

In the afternoon we ventured down to the local store and bought a few groceries and some water and returned to an empty beach! Everyone left when it started sprinkling! It was just an afternoon shower though. Most people seem to travel to the beach for the day so many of them went home.

That evening we all hung out and enjoyed the beach and the sunset (we missed the first bit due to primping of course)! Only Makensie can look absolutely fabulous and chic on a beach in the middle of no where! We spent the evening playing cards and hanging out in the common room of the Ryokan.

The port!

On our way.

Ferry ride!

Walking from the port to the beach.

Beach, Ryokan and eating area.

Glorious, glorious beach!

Sarong clad!

Moooo Bar area during the afternoon
shower! Cleared out!

Day 2

On day two Makensie and I woke up early to go kayaking! We were so proud that we made it to the small island without having to swim there! There was a small shrine there and we looked around a bit, paddled around the bay a bit, and that was that! We ended up going back and renting inner tubes and soaking up the sun. We scoffed at the boys who were spending the morning inside due to too much sun! Unfortunately, I managed to get myself sick from too much sun but as I emphasized before, it was worth it! In the afternoon we enjoyed a Shiatsu massage arranged by the fabulous Amy (visit her blog here)! It was extremely painful and we were saying Itaii! (OUCH!) most of the time but we were incredibly loose and calm afterwards. We went to the store again for snacks in the evening, had dinner and that was pretty much all for the second day!

In the mornings we ordered the traditional Japanese breakfast. In my eight months in Japan I had never tried it. It consisted of rice, miso soup, fish (fresh) and egg. It was delicious but definitely different!

It was an amazing adventure and I hope to go back there again and visit the MOOOO bar run by Amy and her husband. They split their year between Bali and Japan and have traveled all over the world. They have a great store on the beach behind their famous MOOOO bar full of treasures from Bali! I bought a beautiful sarong that you can see in the images (above and below). I wore it for most of the trip and it was one of the best items I have ever purchased.

Don't worry there are still two more posts coming your way about the rest of the vacation. Part four is about our adventure to Shikoku for white water rafting! Stay tuned..

Makensie and I on our kayaking adventure!

Sarong clad with inner tube!
Notice it's tied a different way.
Who would have thought you could
do so much with a piece of fabric!

Moooo Bar!
Amy had all kinds of great deserts as well
as almost any drink you could imagine,
including delicious margheritas or MOOOOgheritas!

Enjoying the afternoon.

Sunset

We were so lucky we had such great weather.
That week there was a serious earthquake in Japan
a Tsunami and a Tsunami warning.

Someone else trying to capture the sunset!

I decided we needed to make a memory of our adventure!
We drew a hanamaru. It is a flower symbol that we write
on all of our students homework.

Hanamaru with all of our names.
Obon 2009 Makensie, Spencer, Spencer and Anthea!

The island we kayaked out to earlier that day.
The boys swam there ! FAR!

Amy drove us back to the port in her cool
Moooo truck!

On our way back.
So sad but off on another adventure!

Spend on Trend!

Written by Treasure Seeker Colleen

SPEND ON TREND, a celebration of Canadian Design, happened Friday, August 21, Saturday, August 22 and Sunday August 23, 2009. Nicole Stewart, Publicity, Marketing and Event Planning, let me know early about the show and participating Canadian Designers, "who ethically produce their work". Right from the invitations, the efficient and friendly emails, the advertising posters and the SPEND ON TREND Show Guide, Nicole truly invited and welcomed us. Downstairs in the Scotia Bank Dance Center, we were offered to have our pictures taken at the Photo Booth (PHOTOBOOTH VANCOUVER) and to have our makeup done. Refreshments and music plus an attractive and clutter free venue for the displays, made for comfortable shopping. There was both the space and the time to talk with the designers and to try on the jewelry and clothing. (I loved how they enthusiastically posed for pictures, too!) Nicole greeted us when we came in and chatted again as we left. Another friendly smile came from Maria Jose Hernandez Cos, creator of STRINGMAGAZINE.ca - Vancouver's Online Fashion Culture Magazine. (Have a look at this month's fashion books and helpful links for borrowing them from the library or buying them online.)

Nicole and Maria ushering in a
fabulous way to be entertained.

Miyajima, Hiroshima

On the afternoon of day two in Hiroshima we visited the magical Miyajima. It is a small island with a very special shrine built on the beach. It was raining when we went and the tide was out so the shrine was not floating but we got to walk out on the beach and see it.

After getting off the ferry we walked into the little town and were surprised to find deer everywhere! Deer are often found in sacred places in Japan but I have never seen any so tame. They were walking up to people and were mostly friendly until one tried to eat Makensie's bag! Apparently you can walk up the mountain and view Miyajima and Hiroshima from above but we didn't have enough time. The site was beautiful and definitely worth stopping by if you visit Hiroshima. That is all from Hiroshima! The next post will be about our adventure on Shiraishi-jima Island in Okayama! Stay tuned..

In other news, I have some really great interviews coming up with local Vancouver designers and artists!

On the ferry.

Hiroshima

Kawaii, ne?

Ahhhh! It's looking at me..oh no here it comes!
Poor Makensie got her bag torn apart by one
eager deer. They were a little scary but so cute!

The little town where we bought
some Omiyage to take back for work.

Tori!
There were hundreds of crabs in the sand!
Of course I wore my cute flats so I had
to walk out there barefoot with much
convincing on Makensie's part! EEK!
I was glad I walked out there though, it is
the second largest Tori in Japan!
What a site to see <3

View from the beach.

Wow!

From below the Tori.

Pagoda

Our last night in Hiroshima.
The view from outside our hotel.
If you are in the area, definitely look
at staying at the Flex Hotel!
It was top notch!

Hiroshima and Peace Memorial

On day two of our Hiroshima vacation we visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in the morning. The grounds of the site are beautiful and there is only one building that remains standing today that survived the Atomic destruction. The museum showed images and models from before and after as well as a background on the events leading up to the war. Let's hope it never happens again.

View near our hotel.

Building left standing-A Bomb Dome.
The building was designed in 1915 by Czech architect
Jan Letzel. It was used for promoting the sale of goods
produced in Hiroshima prefecture.
Later, as the war progressed, it was used as the
Chugoku Shikoku Public Works Office of the
Internal Affairs Agency and the offices of the
Hiroshima District Lumber Control Corporation.

A different view of the building.

On the way to the peace site.

Children's Peace Monument
Sadako Sasaki died ten years after being exposed to the bombing
at the age of two. Her classmates asked for a monument to be built
to remember all the children who died. Over 3,100 schools in Japan
and nine other countries including England participated.
The monument was designed by Kazuo Kizuchi and the crane
was contributed by Dr. Hideki Yukawa.

Flame of Peace and Pond of Peace.

An interesting courtyard near the Okonomiyaki
restaurant we ate at.
