Monday's Collections NYFW Fall 2009 RTW

Here are my top favorites from Monday's Shows at New York Fashion Week. I have decided that it was a little bit ambitious to try and review all of the shows from this season! This will be my last full day recap for New York Fashion Week. I will do a short review of my favorite collections from the rest of the week in the next few days. Teaching English in Japan calls for long hours and I am finding it difficult to have time to review everything! London Fashion Week is now starting this week, so I will be reporting on that as well. I will also be doing a report on the collections I want to see for Tokyo Fashion Week which is exactly in one month! This weekend we visited the marvelous Clematis-no-oka gardens. I will post the pictures soon!

Akiko Ogawa
What a stunning collection from Akiko Ogawa! The fabric color scheme consisted mostly of varying blues but the shape and draping of the made it breathtaking. The lighting used in the show created a very unusual effect. It is unfortunate that this Japanese designer will not be showing at Tokyo Fashion Week this season. It would be a treat to see this show. She was born in Osaka and went to the Kuwasawa Design School. She established her brand in 2001 and presented her first collection in Tokyo in October 2001. You can visit her website here.

Victoria Beckham
This is Victoria Beckhams first Ready to Wear Collection. I thought it was full of simple pieces that would look elegant on everyone. Many of the clothes look very similar to a lot of the looks we see her in! While she is often criticized, I think she has a keen eye for style and is very knowledgable about fashion and what women look for in clothes. These pieces are also very marketable and I think they will sell well. Unfortunately there wasn't a runway show. It would have been great to see what she would have done for a big show! Several of her pieces went on sale at Bergdorf Goodman and Selfridges a few weeks ago. You can see a great interview done by Harriet Mays Powell of New York magazine here.

DKNY
DKNY never fails to disappoint. Their collection was full of reds and blacks and very cool prints. The collection was full of fabulous day wear dresses and separates that could be worn for the day or evening. There were also some great print and hounds tooth pieces.

DVF
While I have to admit that I am an avid watcher of The City with Whitney Port. After seeing the behind the scenes at DVF, I was excited to see what she had up her sleeve for this season. I was not disappointed. While I am not big on wild prints, she did them in a tasteful and elegant way. Her collection was full of fun layering, color and playful hats and accessories.

Lela Rose
I was not huge on the day time pieces from this
collection, the evening pieces were stunning. They looked like they were floating! Don't you think these dresses are Red Carpet worthy? My favorite of the show was the shimmery gold gown seen below. You can visit here website here.

Jonathan Saunders
Look at this collection by Jonathan Saunders! I loved the red lighting effect he used for the runway. WWD certainly wasn't too keen on this collection, stating that it would be a "hard sell" and was too full of "uberdramatic shapes, metallic fabrics, and six inch-crystal covered booties." I though it was full of color and excitement, unlike many of the collections coming down the runway this season. Again, like some of the other shows, the lighting made the show even more phenomenal! What did you think about this collection?

Y-3
Yohji Yamamoto's day sports wear collection was presented on a cool colorful runway. Guests arriving at the show had to pass around a soccer field where a game was playing! Yohji will not be showing his collection at Tokyo Fashion Week! He currently shows collections in Paris and New York. You can visit his website here.

Don't you notice that WWD is always pretty pessimistic? Half of my inbox is WWD saying everything's going down! Anyway, their practicality shines through. The Saunders collection does look like a hard sell for retailers, but for those of us looking for more aesthetic and less commerical... I agree with you! It's a really great and structured collection. I'm used to seeing more flowly, colour, ombre, print
