Giller Light Bash - November 7, 2016: Vancouver!

Got a gift ticket to this celebration, from friend, Dianna, and it was a true gift, for sure. In support of Frontier College, (Canada's original Literacy Organization) and great Canadian writing, we were welcomed in to the CBC building, to a beautifully decorated room, full of flowers made of book pages, scrolls, a print palace for the evening. The Scotia Bank Giller Prize ceremony was broadcast for us and we got to see Madeleine Thien win for her novel: Do Not Say We Have Nothing. It is great to know that we have such an award for Canadian Literature and also fantastic to see more women winning it. I remember taking a Canadian Lit course for one semester and that course covering Australian and New Zealand writing, all at the same time. I am confident that the focus on Canadian writing, specifically, is much greater now. At least we did study works by women as well as men.

The raffle prizes were considerable: A Mixology. Craft Drinks workshop, A Kobo, Food, Books and more. We put our names in to vote on the titles up for the award, too. Lots of ops to meet and greet. And, local authors Aislinn Hunter, Sam Wiebe and Lisa Charlyboy read to us. Host Kathryn Gretsinger, (CBC) was a fabulous host and interviewer! Richard Harvey, Regional Manager, Frontier College, B.C./Alberta/Yukon did his dynamic best to encourage new literacy volunteers.
Loved the Frontier College carrier bag with a new book and Geist and Walrus Magazines. You can find out further details at: gillerlightbash.ca, and frontiercollege.ca. Join me again, next year. Yours in literacy for all. PS Read to someone today. It is such a gift!
