Vancouver Book Launch Celebration: Women in Clothes- Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits, Leanne Shapton & 639 Others

Fascinated by all things fashion, and very interested in re-connecting with Jennifer Croll, editor, free lance writer and author, (Fashion That Changed the WORLD, Oct. 2014) I made my way down to the red brick lofty jewelry shoppe, Cavalier, cavaliergastown.com, site of the launch for Women in Clothes, the book about how we make our style decisions. Over 600 interviews were conducted and these, plus conversations, drawings, photos and more, tell the stories. People's clothing becomes their 'collections' and I loved Julia Leach's Jean Jackets, Claudia Dey's Fedoras and Ivory Simms's Aprons.  Survey question favorites include: What's the situation with your hair? Please describe your mind, Do you consider yourself photogenic? One of the Projects I liked was: Mothers As Others, Part 1 - photos of moms and how we may or may not be like them.  I liked the Conversation: Four Women at a Clothing Swap. There is so much in Women in Clothes, that I had to read it right through from cover to cover. The color, variety of styles and formats and the invitation to think about your own clothing statement and story make this an excellent read, an addition to your book collection or a fabulous gift. I bought it as a treat from The Paper Hound Bookshop.

At the launch, organized by Jen, we heard a panel of speakers including: Mina Shum, film director, Joy Pecknold, Western Ed, of FASHION magazine, Alex Quicho, artist, editor of HWY Magazine, Amber Dawn, wrier and Cynard Geissier, Marketing Manager Arsenal Pulp Press.  This was an on the spot exchange of 'the clothing experience' and the deep complexities of our choice and expression.

We were invited to a clothing swap and shop, too.  We wrote a brief history of each of 3 pieces, hung them up and then chose 3 to take away.  Being tired of black and white, I exchanged my black and white polka dot blouse, often worn with my Bill Blass 40's suit, my chinese padded jacket, usually worn for parent and tot story telling, and one of my short, black tap dance jackets.  I hope the adventure will continue for the women who chose them.  I know a lovely bar tender who will look great in the polka dot number.  What I took home were: a Japanese Yukata (Men's) worn once by the father of a friend who takes part in his village's festival every Spring, a 40's velvet hat with veil, found in a vintage store in Victoria and a handmade v necked, fitted top, made and designed in Vancouver, by designer, Katherine Soucie,(info@sanssoucie.ca) at her no waste and textiles studio in Vancouver.  It is blue and tan and is made of old tights - stunning.

Thanks Jennifer Croll and to everyone who was at the launch!  It was such a lovely and fun way to celebrate.  WOMEN IN CLOTHES, take me away!
