JENNYFLEURLOVES Store Has Moved....

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

Jennifer Gray's Yaletown jewel, JENNYFLEURLOVES...is staying online and, in the near future, relocating to another lucky location.  It's edgy, rock star finds, specialty clothing rack outside, velvet curtains and carved furniture really brightened up the little mall on Mainland.  You can still fin exactly what you want to wear at JENNYFLEUR.COM or call 604-288-2784 to see what else is going on.

On October 24th, customers were invited to close this location but celebrate the past three years of special buys and lots of ongoing possibilities.  Lots of refreshments were artfully displayed and expertly served! Thanks!  Lots of sales to shop, shop, shop.  Snapped a few of my favorite things that I never find anywhere else.  Miss you at the store but see you online.

Everyone dressed up to shop.  Spotted this arty necklace and
fancy buttons on someone buying lots of sparklies.

The Treasure Shopping Tour with Ivan Sayers - October 29th, 2013 - Vancouver

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

So many SMOC events and Ivan Sayers, Vancouver Costume Historian is always at the forefront, leading us back in history and showing us how the present is always influenced by what has gone on, not only here but all over the world. Now, if you're buying, what should you look for?  What are good labels, good design, authentic vintage pieces, and where to look?  Open all boxes, yes, look on the floor, yes, over your head, yes, at what someone has found, yes, know what you want? yes, be open to inspiration? definitely!

This time, very early on a Tuesday morning (the day when most thrift stores offer discounts) the first stop was at My Sister's Closet, on Seymour.  This beautifully decorated store is a beacon for the Yaletown neighborhood.  Profits go towards programs and resources for battered women and their families.  Entirely run by volunteers, trained and mentored by Samantha, (BWSS) this treasure chest offers a range of well priced 'new to you' designer and donated clothing and accessories. Much of the jewelry, pottery, and cards are made by local artisans.  The store offers many programs, job training, and opportunities for students, especially Fashion Design and Merchandising Program students, to see what fabulous outfits they can put together for photo shoots.  My Sister's Closet also participates in ECO Fashion Week, showing us all how to recycle, upcycle and stage a fearlessly fabulous runway show every time. There is no end of possibilities for 'the little store that can' and also no end of treasures to be found.

Where are these beauties from?
There's nothing like an elegant shoe!

Samantha opens the door and wecolmes the shopping tour.
Friendly smiles, coffee and cakes await.

We aim to win!

Diana, Fashion Grad, Fashion Show organizer extraordinaire, Ivan Sayers, leader of the pack, curator, collector, teacher, and extreme treasure hunter just can't resist a look at one more pair of fabulous dress pumps.  Next stop...(there were at least five more to go).. is a secret and one you'll have to ask the shoppers, who toured the city's best that day, to tell you more.  Better yet, go on the next tour, yourself, and get your own hunt on.!  How about a show of fine finds at yet another SMOC event.  See you there!

YWCA and Holt Renfrew Together For a Great Cause!

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

On Tuesday, November 5th, from 7:30-9:30, we were welcomed by Natasha Krotez, Manager, Fund Development, and Chantelle Krish, Advocacy Manager, YWCA, and Holts Staff, to shop and thereby make a contribution to supporting YWCA programs and services in thirty locations across Metro Vancouver.  This organization has been a very strong community developer and supporter since 1897.  It provides resources for specialty housing, early learning and child care, employment and wellness, leadership training and much more.

This was a lovely event, affording us a rare opportunity to see (in a relaxed and quieter setting) the huge range of clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, scarves, hats, perfumes and cosmetics, gifts for everyone on your list, including the kids.  Love the selection of children's Christmas books, toys and even fashion paper dolls!  Two eye-catching sections, for me, this year, are the Imported Foods and the H Project: beautifully hand crafted items, made locally and around the world and all ECO Friendly!  (Note that Holts was part of ECO Fashion Week, Vancouver, this season.

Thank you to all for such excellent service, delicious refreshments and for giving us a great way to give back.
Kudos YWCA and Holts!  We'll be back.

My Sister's Closet Welcomes Blanche Macdonald's Fashion Merchandising Students or Fabulous Fashion Right In Front Of Your Eyes!

Written by Colleen Tsoukalas (Treasure Seeker Colleen)

Samantha, Store Manager literally opens doors for so many people in this community.  Last Tuesday,
Tyler Udall, Fashion Director, Blanche Macdonald's Downtown Campus, brought his Fashion Merchandising Program students into the store to complete 'an assignment in an afternoon'. Put together two outfits for a fashion photo shoot.  Think about color, texture, layering, balance, era - vintage or modern, 'look' and statement.  Present and discuss your choices.  Consider suggestions from your audience.  Everyone was totally involved, from the initial flurry of activity and oohs and ahs at the variety of possibilities to work with, to ensuring everyone had the best outfits and accessories, and finally, to finding just the right location to 'stage' the show.

Open door policy at My Sister's Closet

The students had to complete their assignment without disturbing any of the regular shoppers (who were delighted to watch and learn) and leave the store as they found it: customer ready and beautiful. They were professional, enthusiastic, tactful, creative, and totally stylish!  Their training is very apparent in the outfits they organized and in the way they instantly became models on their 'runway'.  The positive way they interacted with us and with their teacher and fellow students was terrific!

The following photos are just a glimpse of the magic of a whole afternoon.  Thanks Samantha, My Sister's Closet staff and Tyler Udall, and students from Blanche Macdonald's Fashion Merchandising Program, for new directions in learning and learning about style.

Did that jacket come from the treasure chest behind her?
Never saw it until she put it on.

The chair is not for sale but all of the clothes are...sunglasses, too!

Teacher and student present.  Look at those shoes!

Red soles - where are they going?

Never imagined this runway formal (shown at ECO Fashion Week)
combined with this jacket and big belt.  Creative and different.

Men's fashions too!

Smiles all around at the end of a very productive afternoon
Surprise, appreciation and energy!  Well done, all!
