Celia Birtwell Book Review Coming Soon!

I just received my beautiful copy of Celia Birtwell's new book and I can't wait to read it!  Celia Birtwell is a textile designer famous for her beautiful feminine designs and patterns.  She has designed for Topshop, Express and the British department store John Lewis.  Celia is also renowned for being David Hockney's chief muse and her collaborations with fashion designer and former husband, Ossie Clark.

Her new book features photographs from her private collection, fashion sketches and prints.  The book is stunning and I can't wait to review it!

More coming soon...

Ivan Sayers - Treasure Hunting and Birthday Bash

Written by Treasure Seeker Colleen

On the 18th of September, one day before his birthday, Ivan Sayers is working! He's at Hycroft, The University Women's Club in Vancouver, to share with us his history of collecting as well as a bit of his own history, as always fashionable! And what an afternoon it was!

His birthday was celebrated with cards, donations to the OCMS for a future ( hopefully near) fashion museum, thunderous applause, standing ovation and song, and a huge birthday cake. But he gave the gift. His gift was his collection of his favourite pieces, displayed and modelled as well as a compilation of his photographs and articles about him and his work. He emphasizes that it's all about his work, rather than himself. (Not true, you could see the collection but it wouldn't be as much without Ivan detailing the history and where he found each piece and where in his shows it's been highlighted.)

Ivan discovered the Royal Ontario Museum when he was 12 and then started his own museum in his backyard. While he worked at the Lady Alexandra Floating Hotel (near the Bayshore) he enrolled in a Museum Curatorship course at UBC and was written up in the paper for his first display involving fashion and bird feathers and much more. (The copy was there for us to read) He has had 40 years of good reviews and work has always come to him.

One of his favourite shows was one he organized for the CNIB. He took the most tactile elements of his collection and really rose to the challenge of describing the colours for the blind. He continues to work at a passionately fevered pace, supporting charity and fundraising evnts:Breast Cancer, Diabetes and others, teaching for UBC and SFU as well as community colleges, other universities, and Design and Fashion Programs -to share the importance of Fashion History and to support the formation of a local Fashion Museum.

Of the 18th and 19th century clothing displayed at the back of the room, one of the dresses (1760's) was worn in 1945 to celebrate the end of WW 2 - 1945. A man's coat and vest came from Vienna and featured much detail and finery. A wedding dress (1878) was an evening dress refashioned from a wedding dress and came from a collection from Powell River.

A black dress at the front of the room, is a signed Oscar De La Renta! Fashion Historian, Curator, Collector, Teacher, Mentor, Famous Vancouverite and Friend to many...Happy birthday, Ivan...and happy years more of having the best and being the best!

Written by Treasure Seeker Colleen

A 3 day display of local artists' and designers' creations was held at Heritage Hall (3102 Main, Vancouver) Sept. 16, 17, 18th. Spend on Trend was created in 2004 and continues to provide easy and exciting access to new trends in clothing, jewelry, leather, cards, photography, art and much more. Participating fabulists were: Art to Wear, Astrosatchel, Bronsino Designs, Brooklyn Designs, Button and Bauble, Carla Swope Jewels, Clutch Jewels, Dru's Design, Elroy, Filou Designs, Flightpath Designs, Five left, Irit Sorokin, L'arbre Love, Noei, Nostalgic links, Not Your Nana's Silver, Ola Design, Ole Originals, Piknic Designs, Pink Gargoyle Design Co., Revival link, Salts Clothing, Schaart Clothing Co., Toodle bunny, Vlaerie Gobert Jewelry and Vintage Creations.

The first 25 shoppers received a swag bag and were welcomed enthusiastically. The artists all had time and unlimited energy for each customer. The organized and attractive set up and spacious aisles made this a comfortable, friendly place to be. Fiona Louie, owner of Filou Designs is everywhere; I met her at One of a Kind in Toronto and Vancouver and many stores feature her beautiful jewelry. I love her eye for nature, very much reflected in her delicate necklaces and bracelets. A huge thanks to Nicole Stewart who introduced me to all of the artists at Spend on Trend and who keeps me posted on what is happening in Fashion and Design in Vancouver!

The Bay's Fall Preview with Suzanne Timmins

Last Wednesday I had the chance to see The Bay's fall preview with Suzanne Timmins.  Suzanne always gives a great summary of all of the key runway trends and how they can be interpreted for the real world.  The key trends she focused on were: Man Up!, Boho Folk, The Mods and Vivid Brights.  My favorites were Man Up! and Vivid Brights.  It was a beautiful show and Suzanne not only showed us top runway looks on the screen and models, she also had a rack of clothes and showed how pieces could be mixed and matched. Bravo Suzanne!  The Bay has some great pieces this fall.  Definitely check it out!  I attended the event with lovely Anne of Life in the Moderate Lane, you can visit her blog here.

Loved Suzanne Timmin's blouse!

Loved the Vivid Brights!

One of my favorites!

Great pumps!

So Blaire Waldorf!
