Fabulously Iris Apfel: Review

Inspired by the Iris: Seeing Fashion and Supporting Women event Treasure Seeker Colleen attended in Vancouver, I decided to venture out and get a glimpse of the film myself in Toronto. I was not disappointed. The Albert Maysles film was a visual and fabulous Iris Apfel quote delight!

About Iris Apfel:

Iris was born in Queen's New York and studied art history at New York University. Later, she also attended art school at the University of Wisconsin. In her early career, Apfel worked for Women's Wear Daily and interior designer Elinor Johnson and was also an assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman.

In 1948 she married Carl Apfel and in 1950 they launched a textile firm Old World Weavers which they ran until 1992. During this time, Iris participated in several design restoration projects including work at the White House for 9 presidents.

In 2005, The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City premiered an exhibit called Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel. The exhibit featured her astounding fashion collection and jewelry.

Iris continues to consult, lecture on fashion and model (Kate Spade) at age 93!

Favorite quotes from the movie (some are in the clips below):

"I didn't give a damn about going to the party or being at the party, it was getting dressed for the party!"

"I don't have any rules, because I would only be breaking them, so it's a waste of time"

"You're not pretty and you'll never be pretty, but doesn't matter, you have something much better, YOU HAVE STYLE!" (Mrs. Loehmann)

On talking about others' fashion and style, she says, "I can't judge. It's better to be happy than well dressed!"

This documentary is a must see if you are looking for inspiration. Have you seen it or do you plan to see it?
