Luxx Ready to Wear Clothing by Derek Jagodzinski, First Nations Designer

Photos and writing by Dianna Drahanchuk

Luxx ready to wear fashion designer Derek Jagodzinski debuted his dramatic no hassle clothing incorporating modern shapes with a classic edge in 2011, his dream-come-true to be involved with fashion. I visited his tiny three room atelier located in the Birk’s Building in Edmonton. He loves helping real women feel amazing and beautiful whether at their workplace or at events.

A "real woman" happened to be at his studio (visits by appointment only) when I was there to have him lengthen a dress he made for me last year. Nicole Robertson, scintillating media personality, has dedicated her life to creating awareness about Indigenous Peoples. She was in Edmonton and needed a dress to wear to emcee the 20th anniversary Aboriginal Role Model Awards of Alberta. Perhaps the most famous Canadian real woman, Sopie Gregoire Trudeau, has worn a simple but gorgeous red dress designed by Derek (see it in his latest collection on the Luxx website).

Proud of his First Nations heritage, he often assimilates Cree symbology into his designs. His aim is to show everyone, including his own people, how beautiful the culture is. Some of Derek’s designs incorporate First Nations artist works, photography, Cree graphics and some of his own fashion illustrations. His September fashion is titled "The Land, an Homage to Canadiana”. See all his collections on his website: http://luxxreadytowear.com
