Post FMA Vancouver Sky : 360 - My Experience!

I was asked to talk a little bit about my experience working for the FMA Vancouver event. The spectacular, and sold out show, was produced by Andy Chu and choreographed by Victoria Langton. It was a long and very busy day but I got to work with a great team! This opportunity gave me a chance to participate in production, planning, model dressing and backstage duties that are part of a large scale event such as this one!

My day began at nine o'clock, on the morning of Saturday September 27th, at the Centre for Performing Arts in Vancouver. I met with a large group of volunteers in the production office, where stage manager Jay Williams delegated tasks and organized us into teams. We were given a tour of the venue, radios and told about some of the things that we would be doing. We were also given detailed production schedules that explained the order of events and dress rehearsals that would be taking place throughout the day. I have to say that whole production was very well organized!

For most of the day my duties were mostly centred around the production office. Some of my duties included: making signs, preparing rooms for models and performers, giving tours of the backstage area to newly arriving volunteers and basically assisting with whatever jobs came up. It was a very busy day but I enjoyed participating in the whole process and felt that the Stage Manager, Jay Williams, ensured everyone had a valuable learning experience. He was very poised and relaxed at all times!

The plan was for me to assist in the model dressing room at seven o 'clock; until then, I helped direct arriving designers and late coming models and press. Just before the show I went back to the model dressing area and helped assist with models back stage. I helped anywhere I could, for instance: getting models organized into their line ups before going on stage and helping with last minute accessories and quick changes. The key stylist and fashion coordinator of the event, Alecia Ebbels, was extremely well organized and calm throughout the whole show! I was in awe of her ability to think quickly on her feet both during the fitting (the Wednesday prior to the event) and the show. She even had a few pieces from her Penniless collection in the show.

Finally, after the show was over, we had to help clean up and organize the clothes. Some of the designers requested to have their pieces returned immediately after the show. We bagged all of the clothes, cleaned up the model dressing area, moved clothes the clothes racks and helped to tidy up the production office.

Some people might find backstage rather hectic and chaotic, but I thrive in there. I really enjoy being a part of the production and meeting and working with new people! While I didn't get a chance to see the show, I did get a few glimpses of it during dress rehearsals! I will also definitely be watching it when arc 2 intertainment features it on the FMA Vancouver website!
