Indigenous Fashion Week, Vancouver July 26-29: Opening Night

At The Drum is Calling Festival, July 22-30th, there will be a three evening celebration of Indigenous Fashion. A fabulous array of wonderful talent, recognized all over the world and deserves the same recognition and support locally. Now it is here, let's get out there to the Queen Elizabeth Plaza and be ready to be awed and inspired.

Welcomed by Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, we were invited to actively participate by cheering, clapping and dancing to the music with DJ Kookum. We learned from a spoken word presentation by @Ostwelve that it used to be illegal to wear indigenous clothing. Instead, uniforms of smock and pants were issued. Imagine - a uniform...

Opening night was a demonstration of indigenous resilience and beauty. "We raise up Indigenous artistry, materials, and legacy with power, visibility and beauty!"

Huge congratulations to Producer, Joleen Mitton and Co-Producer, Christine Spender.

The four designers featured on opening night: Tyler Jacobs, Michelle George, Loraine Guss and Pam Baker. To you and your fantastic models, kudos, all! Find out more at: www.ifwvancouver.com
