Undressing Drag - Museum of Vancouver

The MOV's current main exhibit is about collections. Many of the collectors have been invited to present the story behind their passion, and Undressing Drag was an evening of heartfelt Vancouver stories and performances that celebrated the history and modern world of Drag.
Willow Yamauchi, a Vancouver story teller and writer, is the daughter of a man who performed as Hydrangea Bovine, with the group, The Bovines, here, in the 1980's.

Willow's story is about growing up surrounded by artists, music and best costumes at Halloween. And, she knew how to put on fishnets without snagging them and to walk in high heels, perfectly, before anyone else in her group. Too young to have been to the clubs to see him perform, she learned more when her mother gave her a bag of costumes that had been in storage, since her dad passed away ten years ago, and she discovered cowprint dresses, gloves, earrings made from pingpong balls and the beginnings of her collection, which also includes many of the people in her father's stage life.
You can hear an interview with her on Ideas, CBC Radio with Paul Kennedy.

Ivan Sayers, Historian, Curator and Collector of women's and men's clothing from 1700 and on, always has the best stories about where he finds his treasures and what they tell us about the people and the times, talked about his university days and introduction to the wild city. (He grew up in Summerland.) He outlined briefly, the history of Drag, from Shakespeare to Japanese Theatre, Pantomime and Vaudeville, to Vancouver Drag culture in the 70's and today. He brought along a pair of Springolator Shoes, with the name Bill inked on the strap. These came from his favorite Salvation Army (Sally Ann) on 12th, between Fraser and Main. Huge wigs and dresses came from a garage sale at a funeral home. Ivan's presentation was a celebration of style, artistry, talent and bravery of a community that was until very recently, secret and often misunderstood.

Peach Cobblah (Dave Deveau) and Isolde N. Barron (Cameron Mackenzie) are a couple in life and in performance. Their music was wide ranging including classic songstresses to hip hop. Their energy and talent brought those they admire most right to us at the MOV!

Costume, Performance, Stories: Collections we need to see and Collectors we are privileged to meet. And they are fantastically curious about what we treasure and especially on what we wear.
Dianna and I wore outfits from My Sister's Closet and Lynn showed off her Value Village Hermes Scarf. For this one evening, I was tall: check out the rose platforms, one of the many donated pairs of brand new fabulous shoes, at My Sister's Closet. I saw vintage Hawaaian shirts, two toned shoes, hats, and glitter galore. Chatted with William Walker, of Walker Millinery about his latest hats and costume projects.  Quite a few members of SMOC were there, too. This was an extremely popular event, with a very interactive audience.

Kudos all, and thanks to MOV for an amazing evening.

IRIS - Seeing Style And Supporting Women - Fashion and Collaboration

Friday, May 29th saw a fantastic collaboration between Vancity Theater's Meagan Lum, Membership Coordinator, and My Sister's Closet's Store Manager, Samantha K., to bring the community together in support of services for Battered Women and their families and to see yet another strong woman of vision and style, IRIS!..

Dressed for IRIS: Mari, Lynn, Colleen, Denise (Left to right)
Colorfully supporting collaboration for a cause: Vancity Theatre and

I am a volunteer at My Sister's Closet and have experienced, first hand, the huge amount of team work from all of the committed, talented volunteers.  It has taken a lot of thinking and planning time to style the mannequins, the racks and the setting for the event: Dianna, Sue, Fran, Samantha, (Samantha's mom) were the all day drive behind the featured ones lighting up Vancity Theatre, on the day!  Everyone dressed up and added to their outfits from the clothing and jewelry for sale, too.  The mannequins were befriended and mightily photographed; it was truly a red carpet evening.  Artisans, Farah, with her round the world jewels, gems and coins and Melanie Cookson's unique quill work, highlighted two more examples of artists providing high style.

In the great room, Meagan had organized an array of fabulous food and I especially loved the IRIS black and white cookies by SUGAR BAKERS.  On the film wall, keeping us company while we enjoyed and socialized, were videos of My Sister's Closet's Fashion Show  Vancouver ECO Fashion Week.

Angela Marie MacDougall, Executive Director of BWSS, gave an inspiring welcome and spoke so powerfully about the continued need for the community to rally around support for programs and services for battered women.  She never fails to mention her great appreciation for those women she already knows and the new ones she met tonight.

I think Iris would find lots of treasures Vancity Theater and My Sister's Closet (BWSS) and in all of who shone at this event.  Big thanks to everyone who put minds, hearts and hands together in fashion for an excellent cause.

Hipster How To: Japan T-Shirts

Happy Monday all! Can't believe the weekend is over already! Time is flying by! If you take a look at my posts from my time in Japan, you will see that two of my very good friends were and still ARE Mindy and Branda. Mindy went back to visit Branda in Japan in the fall and brought back a few of my favorite things! One of the things I requested was a funny Japanese T-Shirt. I still have and wear one of my very favorites, which has a picture of the cartoon character Moomin on it. Branda sent home the amazing T-Shirt below for me and Mindy sent it along and included some of my favorite fashion and gossip magazines :) Such great friends!

On Saturday I went to the Kensington Market with my friend Anthea (yes there is another Anthea)  for brunch and to our favorite Value Village in Lansdowne. I decided to push the fashion envelope and style my T-Shirt a little more hipster than I normally would. I paired it with dark skinnies (thrifted), knee high boots, a brown belt (thrifted), my favorite Land's End winter staple vest, Guess jacket, Encircled scarf, toque from Queen West and clutch from Chapter's of all places!

These photos were taken after brunch and it was freezing! Trying to take more style photos as of late with my new Canon SL1. Here are a few photos of the look and the magazines I received :)

We also went to a great cafe in the Bloor and Landsdowne area. It is called the Intergallactic Space Authority. They have a coffee shop and store and all proceeds go to support community programming for kids in the area. Check out their website here. What a fun Saturday!

T-Shirt from Graniph in Japan - Check it out here.

Nicole Richie is very popular in Japan. She was always on the cover!

Always loved these style magazines. The images are so inspiring!

Amazing coffee and great staff!

Back to Vintage - Gladstone Flea Market and Vintage Shopping on Queen West

Continuing on with the vintage focus; this weekend I visited the Gladstone Hotel Flea Market and ended up meeting some great local Toronto designers!

First up - Shoshanah Kuper of 3rd Floor Studio! Loved her fun playful dresses full of patterns and in flattering and fun shapes. Visit her website here to see where you can find her pieces in Toronto.

Next up - Lisa Carrie Goldberg of Leftovers! She designs jewelry that mixes art, craft and science. Her pieces are made of biological materials, like the below lobster tail made of leftovers from the St. Lawrence market!

A few photos from the market

After the Flea Market, I walked to a few vintage stores past Dufferin and picked up a beautiful vintage briefcase purse for $10 at The Public Butter vintage store. Everything was %50 off, so it was a good day :)

Vintage purses are always great investments and statement pieces.
The Public Butter and my new briefcase :)

The Gladstone Flea Market takes place on the first Saturday of every month in the summer and is curated by Toronto's fashionable to bring you the best vintage and local designers! The event is organized by knitting and DIY expert Laura Hopf of Scarffaces and Limberlina.

Let me know if you would like to hear more about vintage in Toronto and Vancouver! Would love to hear your comments :)
