Jeanne Beker!

This Saturday Jeanne Beker spoke at the Jewish Community Centre for the Opening Gala of the Jewish Book Festival. My cousin and I went and we met a few people there, including Miranda from stylebyfire and Marilyn R. Wilson who is a writer for Vancouver Fashion Ezine.

Vicki Gabereau interviewed Jeanne about her exciting life and adventures in fashion. When asked about what she loves about fashion so much, Jeanne explained that "fashion is theatre of the highest order." It's all about "escapism, fantasy and show!" She especially loves the drama and larger than life characters." She has always had a love for theatre, beginning her career on the sitcom Toby and later studying with renowned Mime, Eitienne Decroux. (Read her biography here.) Jeanne is a captivating speaker, even for those not interested in pursuing a fashion career. Her advice is universal: be willing to create your own opportunities, break boundaries and "get your own job!"

Her recommendations for those who are pursuing careers in fashion? You must have an "open heart and mind." One of her favourite designers to interview? Karl Lagerfeld, for his "witty nature and generosity of spirit." When asked about developing a personal sense of style, she insists you must "Be bold, think outside the box" and be willing to adapt and re-evaluate!

After the show, we all lined up with our copies of "Passion for Fashion" and waited for our chance to speak with her. She was full of energy and was patient and excited to talk to every person she met. Thanks to Jeanne for coming to Vancouver and inspiring us "not to be a afraid and to never give up!"

Thos fabulous five inch heels Jeanne is wearing? Why they're by Canadian fashion house Dsquared!

Jeanne agreed to take pictures with all of us!

Jeanne took her time with each fan and carefully signed their copies of Passion for Fashion with thoughtful comments.

An Interview with Barbara Gregusova

This past week I met with Barbara Gregusova, to talk about her FMA and Vancouver Fashion Week Collections. We met for coffee at a Blenz downtown and quickly launched into a discussion involving her extensive resume, her experiences in fashion, theatre and film industries and the fashion scene in Vancouver. When I first met her working backstage at the FMA Vancouver: Sky 360 show, I was amazed to see her mother and father backstage helping to organize the collection. I later discovered that it was her mother who created the beautiful paper gowns we saw float down the runway, while Barbara created the jewelry. Her mother (Elena Gregusova) is a fashion designer and textile specialist, her father (Martin Gregus) a photographer and graphic designer, her grandmother a textile artist, grandfather a sculptor and jewelry artist and her two aunts are fashion designers in Slovakia. She mentions that back home, in Slovakia, everyone was waiting to see what she would do artistically! Barbara doesn't seem pressured by her family at all, perhaps this is due to the fact that her resume is already extensive and growing by the day!

Barbara moved to Vancouver in 2004, and completed Costuming for Theatre and Film, Costuming for Stage and Screen and Theatre Institute Program at Capilano University and Fashion Merchandising at Blanch McDonald. She insists that it is important to understand how to produce and create costumes for film and theatre and to know how to make and cut garments. She nonchalantly mentions that she began creating clothes for Barbies at a very young age and producing her own jewelry at the age of sixteen, as if it is no big deal. She informs me that her jewelry is more of a hobby, but she has presented it in Slovakian and Belgian Exhibitions as well as one in North Vancouver. The Collection she presented at Vancouver Fashion Week consisted of both jewelry pieces and dresses made with recycled computer and printer parts.

While she says she loves participating in all industries, it is when we talk about her film and theatre work that her eyes light up. What gives her the most sense of accomplishment is "creating characters." Currently, she is designing for several Capilano Productions including, "Tartuffe: Born Again" by Moliere and "Bye Bye Baby” for Presentation House Theatre as well as attending classes full time. She talks about the production process for creating costumes for theatre and film and one of her favourite costume creations from the play Tartuffe. In the play, Tartuffe is a thief and claims to be a man of special religious powers. He manages to put a spell on several people but is eventually caught and sent to prison. At one point, he is forced to strip down to his underwear; Barbara uses a pair of Calvin Klein underwear and incorporated dollar signs to represent his hidden personality and motives to the audience. Barbara is the first student to be hired back to design for the school (Capilano University Exit 22) theatre productions.

In addition to her theatre work, Barbara also works on film projects. Some of her recent film projects include "Bollywood Beckons" with Agam Darshi and Stephen Lobo, "The Collinwood Campaign" with Michael Teigen and her first feature film "Of Golf and God." She also helps style her mother's collections and is the communication director for her "Wear the News" Collection. And while she does model for her mother's collections, she says she prefers to be backstage and allow her work to speak for itself. Be sure to visit her website here. You can read reviews of her Vancouver Fashion Week Collections in String Online Magazine and on Stylefinds. Barbara was a pleasure to interview; she is knowledgeable and passionate about fashion! Thank you Barbara.

You Rock Award Nomination and Tagged!

Happy Monday! I have been honored with my first award by Marta from With Love. I have also been tagged by S of Modern Guilt to answer a few questions. Lots of great posts coming this week including an interview with Vancouver designer Barbara Gregusova. Stay tuned.

I will list six unimportant things that make me happy and tag five other bloggers. I tag Lisa of Solo Lisa Y Nada Mas, Audrey of Frassy, Chloe of Fashion Journalist in the City, Choubelle of Style, and Danielle of Final Fashion. I always tend to over think these things and find them harder than they are but here goes.

1. Going for breakfast at the Elbow Room in Vancouver! You get a huge breakfast and have to get your own cup of coffee. A lot of famous people eat there when they are in town. The walls are littered with autographed pictures.

2. Walking around downtown and shopping (Vanocuver and Toronto). Not necessarily buying,
just visiting the stores and browsing.

3. Value Village trips. Actually any kind of thrifting! I guess I have to enjoy them now because I
am leaving for Japan in three weeks! I will be keeping up my blog and hopefully providing
some Japanese Fashion Coverage, including Tokyo Fashion Week.

4. Blogging, reading blogs and reading about fashion. Well, it's definitely not unimportant..it's
very important to me but it makes me happy. So there!

5. Library books, magazines, cds and dvds make me really happy. Especially when they involve
fashion;)

6. Dancing!

I still have not finished posting from my trip to Toronto! Here are a few pictures from the Kensington Markets! This was probably my favourite place in Toronto!! All of the stores are in heritage houses and they are filled with vintage clothes. Hurrah :)

Comme Des Garcons...Another Blogger Adventure!

Yesterday morning I woke up bright and early to wait in line for the release of the Comme Des Garcons and H & M collaboration. I met with Miranda of StyleByFire and we took turns waiting in line. While we were waiting, we chatted with Judy Ho (VCC Coordinator of Design) and VCC design instructor Lisa Gellert. We discussed the fashion scene in Vancouver and the beauty of H & M Designer Collaborations. It's great to have access to high fashion at affordable prices.

Overall, I was rather disappointed with the collection. I was glad that I tried everything on, because the cut of all of the clothes made me look really boxy. I understand that her design aesthetic is very androgynous but the cuts are not very frame flattering. Nevertheless, people were buying pieces left right and centre! In the end, I didn't end up buying anything but I had a great time chatting with everyone in line and seeing everyone go crazy! I have posted the pictures in the order they were taken. You can see how dark it is with the first photo, 6:45 to be exact! What did you think of the collection? Did you buy anything?

Vancouver Fashion Week-Final Day of Shows

The theme for the final day of Vancouver Fashion Week was Street Wear. While things got going a little late, everything worked out in the end. The afternoon shows included: Ursus the Bear, Pacific Thorn, R & U Styles and Murder Tees. While street wear does not particularly interest me, there were some interesting pieces.

I did not take any photos during the evening shows, as it was a packed house. The evening shows featured a graffiti artist and live dj. The houses were: Ecko Red, Let and Sew (Ecko), Blac Label, Rock Smith, Artful Dodger, Cavi and Roca Wear. Button down cardigans, funky tees and embellished blazers were prominent. Every house threw out free t shirts and hats to the crowd as well. The guests seemed to love the live dj, as people were swaying and dancing to the music. It was definitely an exciting week and I really enjoyed being able to see all of the shows. Until next year! I'd love to hear what you thought of Vancouver Fashion Week. Did you have any favorites?
