HERMES AT WORK - Sept. 21-25 Vancouver

Have long been a fan of luxury label, Hermes, especially for scarves, bags and perfume. Their store at 107-755 is a jewel and I love trying on the perfumes at The Bay. Also there is a specialty store within a store,(where Hermes bags are available) now moved to the main floor handbags/accessories section. Attended its opening and found many beautiful buys here.

When I saw the Hermes At Work exhibit was on at Jack Poole Plaza, I had to go. Never dreamed that I would see the artists at individual stations, making leather and out of it, leather saddles, preparing the dyes and rolling them, illustrating the patterns for scarves, painting porcelain, watchmaking, gemsetting, and so much more. The event was packed with school and university students, cruise ship visitors and loyal Hermes fans, of course.

I noticed that many of the artists wore a Hermes scarf. So many to choose from. I have a red and blue beauty, a vintage design, a gift from Anthea when she was working in Japan. Naturally I had to wear it and show it off. The silk engraver saw it, admired it and tied it 'properly' in the shape of a pouf. I have worn it as a top, a headpiece, a bag accessory and an art piece over my coat or jacket. Rolled edges, one of a kind silk, and stamped. When I visited the store, here, the scarf carried the conversation. Details, photos, and fabulousness at Hermes.

But back to the exhibit, who knew the wide range of Hermes products? How about the apprenticeship and craftsmanship that goes into each piece? The tools themselves are absolutely works of art and so well polished. And, yes, I did try out the giant leather cutting scissors.

Not only did we get the exhibit in English and French, with so much patience and friendly expertise, but we also got the gorgeous blue and red pamphlet: Rendez-Vous With Hermes Craftspeople and a fantastic trade book: The World of Hermes, full of iconic photographs and essays.

Thank you, Hermes. The world of slow and handmade excellence does exist!
