The Life of Vidal Sassoon

Many a time when I am getting my hair cut by my fantastic hair stylist Llisa Spidle, we joke about giving me the Vidal Sassoon bob.  We've never actually gone through with it, but Llisa's cuts are just as precise and shaped right down to the very last hair!  Having thick and wavy hair, I know that it takes talent and precision to create bobs like these.  It is truly an art!

I have always admired the famous Vidal Sassoon bob and Vidal himself.  He passed yesterday after a long and very successful career. I thought I would share a few of my favorite Vidal Sassoon cuts and a bit about his outstanding career!

Vidal was born in London and became famous for his wash and wear five point bob.  After years of teasing, rollers and back combs women were liberated by his easy to maintain angular bobs.  He trained under Raymond Bessone and in 1954 opened his own saloon which was so small, customers had to wait for their hair cuts on the stairs! In 1963 he created the famous "bob cut" and soon his brand launched a line of shampoos and conditioners with the slogan "if you don't look good, we don't look good"! Former colleagues bought his salons and the right to use his name in both the United Kingdom and the US.  Vidal also wrote several books, including "A Year of Beauty and Health" and even had a TV series called "Your New Day with Vidal Sassoon" in 1980.  I just found out about his documentary (posted below) which I will be watching right away! Here is a more in depth summary of his career The Guardian.

Nancy Kwan

Wow, he reached 84 gracefully and doing what he enjoyed. What an excellent example of how people could approach life. So long.

Such an artist! He really proved that there's no realm of beauty or style that can't manifest true, masterful talent and expertise.
